Drum Clinic Synopsis
Mind – Body: Physical and mental preparation and relaxation are necessary for creating a relaxed musical foundation. This must be in place BEFORE any notes or rhythms are played. Remember that toxic people and events in our lives affects our playing – in a negative way. ALWAYS try to stay positive. Being a great musician transcends being a great instrumentalist or vocalist.

Technique: Why do you practice? Objectively decide how you view technique and practicing and how it works for YOU. Develop a syllabus for your practice routines to help avoid repetition. With perseverance, maintain a consistent, patient and productive practice regiment. Practice, practice and practice. Listen, listen and listen. Embrace the fact that practicing should make things easier and not for purposes of velocity or showmanship.

Objectives: What is it you want to do? What style(s) of jazz – or other types of music do you want to play? What level of musical knowledge and ability are required to play the music? Are you honestly prepared? What are your intentions? What level of study is necessary? Objectively decide how much technique do you need to accomplish your musical goals. Do you understand the history of the music you choose to play and your instrument?

Surrender: Robert Frost wrote about the “road less traveled” and Duke Ellington talked about “solitude” - for a reason. To reach your objectives you must reduce the amount of time you put into doing other things such as video games, skate boarding, chasing the girls or boys, etc….You will simply have to let some things go to reach your goals. Confirm what truly is the most important thing you need to get you there and work diligently toward obtaining them.

Composition – Improvisation: Now what do you play? How do you develop a concept? The composition will contain the answers but you have to know how to find them. It will contain the story and your improvisation will show how you tell it. Once the aforementioned are taken care of - your musical priorities and objectives will be easier to reach. Now, stop thinking so much and PLAY!!!

I hope you'll check out some of my recordings and my latest release, "Confluence." It contains some of my best recorded performances. Thank you for visiting my web site and I hope you'll come back. Lets keep the drumming spirit alive and well!!! Peace,
